Introduction
What OLEANZ 5MG is used for?
It is used for treating:
- Schizophrenia a disease with symptoms such as hearing, seeing or sensing things which are not there, mistaken beliefs, unusual suspiciousness, and becoming withdrawn. People with this disease may also feel depressed, anxious or tense
- Moderate to severe manic episodes, a condition with symptoms of excitement or euphoria
Warning & Precautions
Talk to Doctor
Talk to your doctor before you take this medicine, if you:
- Are allergic (hypersensitive) to olanzapine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Have been previously diagnosed with eye problems such as certain kinds of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- Are suffering from diabetes, heart, liver or kidney disease
- Have or have had parkinson’s disease or seizures
- Have or have had prostate problems or blocked intestine (paralytic ileus)
- Have blood disorders or stroke
- Are an alcoholic
Pregnancy & Breast Feeding
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- You should not be given this medicine when breast-feeding, as small amounts of OLEANZ 5MG can pass into breast milk
Children & Adolescents
- OLEANZ 5MG is not for patients who are under 18 years
Driving & Using Machines
- There is a risk of feeling drowsy when you are given Olanzapine. If this happens do not drive or operate any tools or machines
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
- Medicines for Parkinson’s disease
- Carbamazepine which is an anti-epileptic or mood stabilizer
- Fluvoxamine which is an antidepressant
- Ciprofloxacin which is an antibiotic
How to Use
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Your doctor will tell you how many OLEANZ 5MG to take and how long you should continue to take them
- The daily dose of OLEANZ 5MG is between 5 and 20 mg
- You should take your OLEANZ 5MG once a day following the advice of your doctor
- Try to take your medicine at the same time each day
- It does not matter whether you take them with or without food
- Swallow the OLEANZ 5MG whole with water
- Do not chew, crush or break it.
- It may take 4 to 6 weeks to see full effects on thoughts and mood. Keep taking it as prescribed.
- Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration as Oleanz 5 Tablet can cause dizziness and sleepiness.
- It may increase your weight, blood sugar and cholesterol. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and monitor your blood levels regularly.
- To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.
If you take more OLEANZ 5MG
- Contact your doctor or hospital straight away if you experience any of the above symptoms
If you forget to take OLEANZ 5MG
- Take your dose as soon as you remember
- Do not take two doses to make up missed dose
If you stop taking OLEANZ 5MG
- Do not stop taking OLEANZ 5MG just because you feel better
Side Effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them
Serious
- Blood clots in the veins
- Combination of fever, faster breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness and drowsiness or sleepiness
- Weight gain
- Formation of blood clots
- Chest pain and difficulty in breathing
Common
- Sleepiness; and increases in levels of prolactin in the blood
- Changes in the levels of some blood cells, circulating fats and early in treatment
- Temporary increases in liver enzymes
- Increases in the level of sugars in the blood and urine
- Increases in levels of uric acid and creatine phosphokinase in the blood
- Feeling hungrier
- Dizziness
- Restlessness
- Tremor
- Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Rash
- Loss of strength
- Extreme tiredness
- Water retention leading to swelling of the hands, ankles or feet
- Fever
- Joint pain and sexual dysfunctions such as decreased libido in males and females or erectile dysfunction in males
Uncommon
- Hypersensitivity (e.g. swelling in the mouth and throat, itching, rash)
- Diabetes or the worsening of diabetes, occasionally associated with ketoacidosis (ketones in the blood and urine) or coma
- Seizures, usually associated with a history of seizures (epilepsy)
- Muscle stiffness or spasms (including eye movements)
- Restless legs syndrome
- Problems with speech
- Slow heart rate
- Sensitivity to sunlight
- Bleeding from the nose
- Abdominal distension
- Memory loss or forgetfulness
- Urinary incontinence, lack of ability to urinate
- Hair loss
- Absence or decrease in menstrual periods
- Changes in breasts in males and females such as an abnormal production of breast milk or abnormal growth
Rare
- Lowering of normal body temperature
- Abnormal rhythms of the heart
- Sudden unexplained death
- Inflammation of the pancreas
- Liver disease appearing as yellowing of the skin and white parts of the eyes
- Muscle disease presenting as unexplained aches and pains
- Prolonged and/or painful erection
- Urinary incontinence, falls, extreme tiredness, visual hallucinations
- A rise in body temperature, redness of the skin and have trouble walking
- Eosinophilia

The treatment of anxiety with Oleanz is not an approved indication. Oleanz has been studied for treatment of anxiety disorders but the results have not been very convincing. However, it can be used along with anxiolytics in anxiety disorders for better results.
Q. Is Oleanz a sleeping pill?
No, Oleanz is not a sleeping pill. It belongs to the atypical antipsychotic class of medicines. It is used to treat schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions. Oleanz also helps with bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder). It is a disease that causes episodes of depression, mania, and other abnormal moods.
Q. How long does it take for Oleanz to kick in?
Oleanz may start showing initial improvement within 1-2 week of starting. However, for full benefits it may take about 4-6 weeks. You should continue taking it and consult your doctor in case you feel that Oleanz is not helping you.
Q. What is the most important information that I should know about Oleanz?
Oleanz can cause serious side effects which include increased risk of death in elderly people who are confused, have memory loss and have lost touch with reality (dementia-related psychosis). It is important to know that it may increase blood sugar levels in diabetics and also in patients who never had diabetes. Furthermore, it may cause weight gain and high fat levels in the blood which is more common in teenagers.
Q. Can Oleanz be taken during pregnancy?
Oleanz should be avoided during pregnancy and should only be given if benefits outweigh the risk. Using Oleanz during last 3 months of pregnancy may cause unwanted symptoms in the unborn baby. These symptoms include shaking, muscle stiffness and/or weakness, sleepiness, agitation, breathing problems, and difficulty in feeding.
Q. Can I stop taking Oleanz if I am better?
You should not stop taking Oleanz without consulting your doctor. This is because sudden discontinuation of the medicine may cause unpleasant side effects which include sweating, unable to sleep, tremor, anxiety or nausea, and vomiting. To avoid such effects, your doctor will reduce the dose gradually before stopping the treatment.
Q. Does smoking or alcohol interfere with working of Oleanz?
Yes, smoking interferes with working of Oleanz causing an increase in its metabolism. One should avoid alcohol while taking Oleanz since it may cause more drowsiness. However, if you are a smoker then your doctor may increase your dose depending on your response to treatment.
